Gateway2Growth

Strategic objectives

To lobby the government for a new junction – Junction 18a – on the M4 motorway to ease congestion not just in Emersons Green but across the region.

Areas of support

  • Launch of campaign at the Bristol & Bath Science Park, which was attended by regional MPs and the then Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin
  • Working closely with local MP Chris Skidmore who raised the campaign at PMQs
  • Development of a campaign petition and supporting letter from the local business community
  • Launch of the Gateway2Growth report, an 18 page document putting the economic case for the junction and a clear overview of the funding options, at the House of Commons. This was launched by the then Transport Minister Andrew Jones, MP
  • Meetings held with the Transport Secretary and engagement with the Chancellor of the Exchequer
  • A media relations programme to support the campaign

Outcomes

  • The Government announced £500,000 of investment for Junction 18a in the Budget 2016, the largest of its kind for 21 years . This will be spent on a feasibility study to be undertaken by South Gloucestershire Council – a significant first step towards the project being delivered
  • 100 local businesses put their name to letter in support of the campaign

“We do need to deliver better transit schemes in Bristol and I know the Transport Secretary will be happy to look at the campaign and the case he makes.”
David Cameron, March 2015

“I am delighted that the campaign was able to achieve so much in short space of time – as a result of the campaign the junction features as a key ambition in the West of England Devolution Deal and Joint Transport study.”
Chris Skidmore, MP for Kingswood
