James Murray, Deputy Mayor for Housing and Residential Development under Sadiq Khan, addressed an audience of developers and investors today 22 June 2017. The event, co-hosted by JBP and Clyde&Co, heard James set out how he is planning to help deliver the homes that Londoners need.
James outlined where the focus of the Khan administration currently is and his hope that the appointment of a new Housing Minister will ensure that there is stability in national policy making. Given the cooling off in the high end residential market, there are three areas that need to be the focus going forward:
- Creating more midmarket homes for sale in outer London
- Build to Rent
- Affordable housing
James also took questions from the audience and touched on how Brexit has created uncertainty and is likely to have an impact on the supply side given the role of EU nationals in the construction sector.
Commenting on the event, Managing Director of JBP James Turgoose said:
“ We were delighted to welcome James Murray this morning. He set out the challenge that Sadiq Khan faces and his vision for how to tackle it. It was particularly interesting to hear his thoughts around the role that Outer London will be required to play in delivering the homes we need. This suggests that there could be a number of political battles in the months ahead between City Hall and Conservative Boroughs in the run up to the 2018 elections.”
