JBP Associates has this week completed a two-year assignment to support National Grid to refurbish power lines in Devon and Cornwall. The projects, worth a combined total of around £80 million investment by National Grid in the network, will help keep energy flowing to homes and businesses in the south west for another 50 years.
JBP provided a range of services to communicate the purpose and impact of the work across communities between Indian Queens and Exeter, as well as acting as the central point of contact for residents, politicians and businesses when people had questions or feedback.
James Hinchcliffe, JBP Strategic Engagement Director, said: “Our business is proud to have provided National Grid with a comprehensive stakeholder engagement service for one of the most complex communications projects we have undertaken in our 30-year history.
“We’ve communicated with 35 local communities, 120 local councillors, and 8,000 local people stretching 120 miles and 450 pylons to help National Grid to improve and maintain their reputation as a responsible business during a very busy 24-month period. Our seven day a week community relations helpline has been red hot with hundreds of residents calling with questions, queries and feedback about the overhead line refurbishment.
“JBP’s skills, experience and application of the latest innovative techniques in stakeholder engagement have supported us to manage the incredible demands of this extensive communications programme.”
The services provided by JBP included liaison with local councillors, MPs and local authority staff, digital communication and keeping residents near the pylons updated about the work. The JBP team also joined forces with National Grid engineers to deliver school education sessions at five schools in the region.
Matt Wooldridge, South West Regional External Affairs Manager for National Grid, said: “We’ve received positive feedback from local communities and councillors about the way in which they have been kept up to date with these projects. Over the past two years, JBP has been proactive in providing a valuable communications support service which has helped us to maintain and enhance our reputation as a responsible business in communities where we work.”
