Whitechapel Road is set to become the latest beneficiary of the Greater London Authority’s High Street Fund. The fund has been allocated £9m and is available to any organisation looking to make an improvement to their high street. Tower Hamlets Borough Council has agreed to match the Greater London Authority’s (GLA) allocation of £520,000, bringing the total investment in Whitechapel Road to just over £1m.
Whitechapel has been earmarked for development in line with the Whitechapel Vision Masterplan. The vision has nominated several key transformation sites, including Whitechapel Road, that are seen as pivotal in the regeneration of Whitechapel. The GLA hopes that this investment will “promote a lively economy” and “build on a momentum of change”.
Councillor Rabina Khan, cabinet member for housing and development, said: “It’s fantastic to hear that our vision for Whitechapel is being recognised as one of the leading regeneration projects in the country. What is so brilliant about the Whitechapel Vision is that residents are so on board with this project. We want to capture their enthusiasm for these plans and ensure that, by 2025, Whitechapel is even more of a thriving, cohesive and vibrant community.”
