JBP has appointed Simon Cook, former Lord Mayor of Bristol and Leader of the city’s Council, as senior counsel to support its public policy and stakeholder engagement activities in the West of England.
Cook was elected to Bristol City Council in 1999 and served as Lord Mayor, Deputy Leader, Leader of the Council and Assistant Mayor to George Ferguson, the first Elected Mayor. During his time at the Council he had a wide range of executive responsibilities, including culture, business change, transport and spatial strategy.
Prior to his career in the Council, Cook trained as an actor at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and spent twenty years working in theatre, film and television. He has been a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company and appeared in many television dramas.
He also served on the Regional Council of Arts Council England and in 2016 was awarded an MBE for services to culture.
Chris Lawrance, Managing Director of JBP’s Bristol office, said: “We are delighted to welcome Simon on board. He is a hugely respected figure in regional arts, business and political circles and will play a key strategic role in our political and stakeholder engagement work across the West of England.”
Simon Cook said: “I am delighted to be joining JBP, which has a growing reputation in the West of England and nationally as an agency that really delivers for its clients. I have worked with staff at the agency over a long period on a number of projects and look forward now to bringing my wider experience to the benefit of the company going forward.”
In addition, Chris Hayward has joined JBP’s London team as a Senior Counsel. Chris is the Chairman of the Planning and Transportation Committee of the Corporation of the City of London and has held a variety of senior roles in local government for nearly thirty years. He has served variously as the Deputy Leader of both Dorset and Hertfordshire County Councils and as the Leader of the Opposition on Three Rivers District Council. He has also stood as a Parliamentary candidate and served at board level on the Local Government Association.
Paul Smith, who has been a Senior Counsel at JBP for 2 years, becomes Chairman of JBP’s London Political Unit. This new Unit will focus on providing high level intelligence and engagement advice for clients across London as the Capital gears up for Borough elections in under 12 months’ time.
James Turgoose, Managing Director of JBP’s London office added: “Both Chris and Paul provide unique insights into the world of London politics and we are delighted that they will be working in tandem to ensure we continue to provide the best advice to our clients”.
