Strategic objectives

To change regulations governing the way drugs for people with serious and life threatening conditions are developed and prescribed.

Areas of support

  • Significant cross party political, industry and academic engagement, with issue raised in a number of House of Commons and House of Lords debates
  • Extensive media relations programme targeted at regional, national print and broadcast media
  • Created active online patient communities to establish a cost effective way of disseminating Empower’s messages via existing platforms, including a Government e-petition and online charter on Change.org
  • Established campaign founder Les Halpin as a thought leader in a fast moving and complex debate

Outcomes

  • A new ‘Earlier Access’ scheme was launched by the Government in March 2014 at an Empower event in Parliament; Empower was cited as one of the key campaigning organisations that helped deliver it
  • Featured on BBC Radio 4 Today Programme, BBC Radio 5, BBC Breakfast, Sky News, the Sunday Times and Mail on Sunday
  • Significant support gained from cross party politicians, academics, patients and celebrities including: Professor Stephen Hawkins and Sir Bradley Wiggins
